About this study aid
The short version
We are an independent study aid for the Life in the UK Test. We are not the government. Our questions are original, written from the official handbook, and every one of them tells you which handbook section it came from so you can check us.
We are not affiliated with the Home Office
British Citizenship Test: Practice is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Home Office, GOV.UK, UK Visas and Immigration, or any government body. We cannot book your test, we cannot influence your result, and we are not a substitute for the official handbook.
You book the real test at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. It costs £50. Anyone charging you more than that to "book" it for you is not the government either.
Where our questions come from
The only source of the real test's questions is the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition, incorporating the official updates made on 15 June 2023). Everything we ask is drawn from that book.
Our questions are original works. We do not reproduce the handbook's text, and we do not reproduce real exam questions — both are Crown copyright, and doing either would be both illegal and useless to you. We read the facts and write our own questions testing them, in our own words, with our own explanations.
How we try to be more accurate than the alternatives
The most common complaints about citizenship-test apps are that they contain wrong answers, or questions about things that aren't in the handbook at all. Both of those failures cost real people a real £50 exam. So:
- Every question is traced to a handbook section, shown to you on the answer. If we're wrong, you can prove it.
- Every question passes an automated validator before it ships — checking that it has a correct answer, an explanation, a chapter, a source, and that it isn't a duplicate.
- Anything we are not certain about is held back, not published. We would rather ship a smaller bank we can defend than a bigger one we can't.
- We track which questions people fail most, anonymously, because an unusually high failure rate is often a sign that our answer key is wrong, not that the question is hard. That's how we find our own mistakes.
- We can fix a bad question the day we find it, without waiting for an app-store release, because our questions are data rather than code.
Where the handbook is out of date
The handbook dates from 2013 and has only been partly updated since. Some of what it says is no longer true in the real world — but the test is still based on the handbook. Where those two things conflict, we teach you the handbook's answer, because that's the one that scores the mark, and we say so plainly in the explanation.
Where the official material has genuinely been changed — for example, the monarch is now King Charles III, and the passages about EU membership have been removed — we follow the change. We do not test material that is no longer in the syllabus.
How we make money
This website is free and always will be. The mobile app is free to download and includes two full mock exams and two complete chapters at no cost. If you want the rest, there is one optional payment, once, and you own it forever.
There are no adverts. There is no subscription. There is no "free trial" that quietly starts charging you. We think that's the least you should expect, and it's most of the reason people recommend us.
Found a mistake?
Tell us, and we'll fix it. Accuracy is the entire point of this product; a report of a wrong answer is the most valuable message you can send us.
