The Life in the UK Test in 2026

Short answer: nothing has changed. The format, the pass mark, the fee and the study material are all the same as they have been for years — and that's good news for you.

Is there a 4th edition of the handbook?

No. Despite what a lot of websites imply, there is no 4th edition. The official study material is still Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents, 3rd edition, first published in 2013. Every question in the real test is drawn from it.

Books sold as the “2026 Handbook” are third-party repackagings of that same 3rd-edition content. You don't need a new one. If you already own the 3rd edition, you own the current syllabus.

Be careful what you revise from

Because the handbook is from 2013, some of what it says is out of date in the real world but still correct for the test. The clearest example is the European Union: the handbook predates Brexit and still describes the UK as a member state. The test is based on the handbook, so the handbook's answer is the one that scores the mark.

This trips people up constantly, and it's one of the reasons apps get bad reviews — they "correct" the handbook and hand you a wrong answer. We don't. Where the handbook has been overtaken by events, we teach the handbook's answer and tell you plainly in the explanation why it differs from reality.
